You recognise you can’t improve on nature, and you shouldn’t even try. And the Wild Irish Rose means so much to people just the way it is. So I had very little to do with this collection except to figure out how to portray the delicate structure of a wild Irish rose in precious metal. I found the softness of the petal structure could be captured immediately, with folds and by cutting ripples as texture into the surface. The centre is more about applying fragments and daubs of solid gold, these drew the eye into the heart of the piece much in the way the wild rose does when it offers itself from the brambles and blackthorn hedgerows around any Irish lane in the summer. 1.5cm diameter. 2.5cm total drop.
